A Colorado couple that was forced to shut down their ATV rental shop has decided to switch careers and get into the pornography business.

According to a story posted on Dailycamera.com, the web home of the Boulder, Colorado newspaper, Jeff and Vicki Mead plan to open the “Patterson XXX Porn Gallery” in Allenspark, CO later this summer, much to the dismay of some of the town’s residents.

The porn gallery will offer adult merchandise and artwork, and will be housed in the former Eastin Gallery and Studio, a two-story log cabin in Allenspark. The Meads had owned and operated an ATV rental business in the same building where the gallery will be located. They had been illegally renting out vehicles from the building until the county forced a special-use review earlier this year. It is Jeff and Vicki’s position that launching a porno store is the only way they can earn a living in the building since Boulder County commissioners denied their application to store and rent out ATVs. The commissioners claim that they denied the application due to complaints from nearby residents about the noise and environmental impact of the ATV vehicles that would be available for rent.

Boulder County Commissioner Ben Pearlman explained that he knew what the Meads were planning to do if their application to operate their ATV business was denied, saying that Jeff Mead essentially warned the county the porn shop was coming during the hearing for the ATV business.

The Meads bought the site of the Eastin Gallery and Studio in February 2007 for $428,000. They defended their choice to turn the mainstream art gallery into a XXX gallery by claiming that the porn business is a more profitable venture.

The most vocal protesters against the Patterson XXX Porn Gallery, as well as the ATV business, have been Glenn and Margie Patterson who are neighbors to the building where the gallery is housed. The couple also believes that the porn gallery is being named after them out of spite. The Meads maintain that the gallery is being named after New York Governor David Paterson. They say that the gallery will bear his name due to the Governor’s work as a First Amendment rights activist. However the governor spells his last name with only one T.
